Among a great number of applicants RB Arkitektur, the construction company Åke Sundvall Byggnads AB and the office of landscape architecture Urbio have been chosen to jointly form the first stage of the new city development area of Östra Sala Backe in Uppsala. Uppsala is the fourth largest city of Sweden, situated 70 km north of the Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. Founded in 1477, Uppsala University is the oldest center of higher education in Scandinavia. Uppsala is also the ecclesiastical center of Sweden, being the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden.

The municipality of Uppsala has decided to develop Östra Sala backe into an attractive city environment with habitations, service and workplaces. Östra Sala backe is to become an important part in the development of the eastern district of Uppsala and will contribute with something new in terms of substance, function and design. The area will be planned and built with the people in focus and with the point of departure in the latest technology and environmental sustainability. The new structure will link together surrounding areas into a coherent and closely connected district, and help create a more compact, more intimate and functionally diverse district with an inner city character.
