Lonely Planet guide book readers vote Iceland Best in Travel 2012

Lonely Planet, the world’s biggest travel guide book and digital media publisher, recently announced that Iceland topped its “Best In Travel” list for 2012, and Reykjavik gained the top spot in the best cities category.
 
Both awards are part of the Lonely Planet’s annual “Best of” collection, where travelers from around the world are asked to pick the best city and country for the Travel Readers’ Choice Award. Participants are asked to select destinations they feel are the hot picks for the following year and explain why.
 
After hundreds of nominations for cities and countries and over 3000 votes for the finalists, Lonely Planet announced the 2012 results, in which Iceland reigns.

“Iceland is all about incredible nature and in 2012, nature will be out in force with increased volcanic activity and increased aurora activity,” readers explained. “Reykjavik is hip, cool, small but offers everything that large cities do. Good hotels, food, nightlife, music and nature is only a few steps away, and it’s finally affordable.”

Iceland came out ahead of Italy, India, the Philippines, Turkey, Colombia, the UK, Slovenia, the USA and Mexico. Reykjavik was voted top city for next year followed by Lisbon, Istanbul, Barcelona, London, Berlin, Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, New York and Puebla.

Furthermore, in 2010, Lonely Planet crowned Iceland as one of its “Perfect Trips for 2010” and 2011 saw Iceland as the top budget destination of the year, as well as the Westfjords of Iceland hit the top 10 regions to visit.
