Salmonella Contamination Feared in Bagged Salads

EMSL Analytical, Inc. tests for Salmonella in food products

WEBWIRE

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced a voluntary recall of bagged salads due to possible Salmonella contamination.

Washington State Department of Agriculture discovered evidence of Salmonella after officials randomly tested a package of spinach from Taylor Farms Retail of California. The company is now recalling 3,265 cases of salad blends sold under the brands Fresh Selections, H-E-B, Marketside, and Taylor Farms. No illnesses associated with the products have been reported.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.” In rare cases, the infection can become life-threatening and require hospitalization.

“EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides fast, accurate Salmonella testing services in our food products division,” states Joseph Frasca, Senior VP of Marketing at EMSL. “Our experienced team of microbiologists and laboratory professionals can analyze both food and environmental surface samples.”
