London Internet Exchange Builds High-Performance Network Architecture with Juniper Networks to Manage Exploding Traffic Levels


PTX Series Packet Transport Switch Slated to Power One of the World’s Largest Internet Exchanges with a Converged Supercore for Scale, Simplicity & Efficiency

LONDON — London Internet Exchange Ltd. (LINX) and Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced that LINX, a mutually-owned membership association for operators of Internet Protocol networks and one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges, is building a new network based 100 percent on Juniper Networks technology. The network, being built in two phases, will enable LINX members to interconnect and share video, cloud and other content-rich traffic reliably, rapidly and cost-effectively across fixed and mobile offerings.

The first phase of the new architecture will comprise Juniper Networks® MX Series Ethernet Services Routers, and Junos® Space, Juniper Networks’ programmable network application platform. Junos Space Network Activate, an MPLS network automation application, is also being deployed within the first phase. Network Activate is designed to enable LINX to automate the configuration, monitoring, management and trouble-shooting of its MPLS services, making it highly responsive to user and application requirements. The second phase, scheduled for deployment in the first half of 2012, is slated to include Juniper Networks PTX Series Packet Transport Switches and will run on Junos OS, Juniper’s single operating system in common with the phase 1 deployment.

The LINX infrastructure comprises 10 Points of Presence (PoPs) across London, from Docklands in the East to Slough in the West. The MX Series will be deployed within these PoPs and in the core. The PTX Series is designed to create a Converged Supercore™, uniquely able to combine native MPLS packet switching and optical transport capability end-to-end within a single network layer. It can help organizations like LINX to manage evolving traffic patterns effectively and economically. End user demand for high-quality content across an array of devices and access technologies puts increasing pressure on LINX members to deliver richer, faster services while facing falling revenues. The new platform will help LINX remain one of the few areas of their members’ business where operational costs will continue to fall rather than rise.

The LINX deployment is being facilitated by Juniper Networks’ local partner, Telindus Ltd.
