New Product Expands Company’s Displays Offering

WILMINGTON, Del., - DuPont today announced the launch of DuPont™ Optilon™ Advanced Composite Reflector (ACR), a new product designed to significantly improve the performance of liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Optilon™ ACR allows better light utilization and color balance in displays, with lower overall display cost. Optilon™ reflectors are located in the rear of the display backlight, and reflect light to the front of the display with very high efficiency. Initial use of the product, now commercial, is in 32-inch diagonal LCD televisions.

DuPont provides at least six essential products used in displays. The company estimates the global LCD market to be more than $70 billion.

“This is another example of DuPont’s broad portfolio of science and technology coming together to provide unique materials, films and technologies not previously used in displays,” said Cynthia C. Green, vice president and general manager, DuPont Fluoroproducts. “We continue to find and develop new opportunities that bring DuPont innovations to the industry to make displays perform better, more efficiently and at lower cost for customers and consumers.”

DuPont™ Optilon™ ACR reflects light with up to 98 percent efficiency and all colors equally well, including blue light. In addition, the light is reflected over a very large range of angles, up to five times greater than conventional reflectors. With this combination of properties, the use of Optilon™ ACR results in more light emanating from the front of the display with more balanced display color.

DuPont plans to extend the Optilon™ brand with new products currently in development, including single-layer, wet-coated anti-reflective films. Optilon™ anti-reflective films would be located on the top of the display to eliminate unwanted reflections and glare. They combine outstanding optical performance with the cost-effectiveness of a single-layer film.

In addition to Optilon™ ACR, other DuPont offerings to the displays market include:

* A unique solution-processing of small molecule materials for organic light emitting diode displays (OLEDs);
* Further developments in the company’s laser imaging process to replace photolithography in the manufacture of color filters for LCDs;
* Films for displays, provided by the DuPont Teijin Films joint venture;
* DuPont™ Kapton® E polyimide films for very fine pitch circuitry, superior dimensional stability, high modulus, and easy processing through chemical etching and laser ablation;
* DuPont™ Pyralux® flexible circuit materials that are adhesiveless flexible laminates enabling sharp, crisp, flawless images;
* DuPont™ Vespel® parts and shapes that improve yields, increase throughput, reduce consumables and increase manufacturing space.
