The app is aimed at working musicians and is written by well-known sound engineer Bill Winn. It’s currently available in the iTunes store under the name FreQ.
FreQ is more than just an app that does a few parlor tricks. It is an app designed to reduce the communications gap that often exists between professional musicians and sound engineers. This gap occurs when, during a sound check, a musician refers to something he’s hearing in terms like “muddy”, “harsh”, or “twangy.” While these terms sound completely reasonable to musicians, a sound engineer doesn’t necessarily hear the same things. FreQ takes the ambiguity out of the equation.
The app allows the iPhone to produce all 88 notes found on a full-sized piano. When a musician finds a note causing problems, he can press a button to find out the exact frequency of the note in question. Armed with the frequency, a sound engineer now has a workable reference point he understands rather than the musician’s description. Working musicians and sound engineers will find this app amazing in its ability to cut out wasted rehearsal time and solve problems that would otherwise lead to arguments.
