Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. Recalls Products Containing Cantaloupe Due to Listeria Risk

EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides testing for Listeria monocytogenes and other foodborne pathogens

Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. of Depew, New York is recalling 4,800 packages of cantaloupe and mixed fruit products due to possible Listeria contamination. The recall includes “Cantaloupe Chunks,” Cantaloupe Slices,” Gourmet Fruit Salad,” “Small Fruit Salad,” “Small and Large Fruit Salad with Pineapple,” “Fruit Salad with Kiwi,” and “Fruit Trays” with best-if-used-by dates of September 4th through September 11th.
So far no illnesses have been attributed to the consumption of these products. The Food and Drug Administration’s recall announcement details the “stringent procedures” used by Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. to minimize contamination, describing how a sanitizing solution is applied to rind before cutting and then again to the fruit’s flesh after the seeds are removed. “Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. is recalling these products out of an abundance of caution,” notes the FDA.
This announcement is part of a larger recall of cantaloupe tainted by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. As of October 3, 2011, the outbreak has claimed 18 lives and sickened 100.
“At EMSL Analytical, Inc., we are dismayed by the continued turmoil caused by the outbreak and by the news that more products are implicated in the recall,” states Joseph Frasca, Senior VP at EMSL. “To assist companies and individuals in cases such as these, we devote an entire department solely to food testing, which includes the analysis of Listeria.”
