Fornebu, Telenor - On Wednesday, the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy celebrated the opening of a high-tech IT laboratory sponsored by Telenor. The laboratory was opened as part of “Democracy and Public Service Capacity Building in Ukraine”, which is a training programme for Ukrainian civil servants.

The Telenor-sponsored project will combine courses teaching best practice for state management systems used in European countries, with the latest information technologies. National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” President Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky, Norway’s Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Telenor President and CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas attended the ceremonial opening of the educational laboratory in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Over the course of the next two years, Ukrainian civil servants will attend courses at two educational centres, the first of which opened on Wednesday. The Lviv branch of the Pylyp Orlyk Institute for Democracy will open the second centre in the near future.

“The Kyiv-Mohyla Academy will invite the best lecturers in Ukraine and Europe to implement this programme. We welcome private sector initiatives supporting educational programmes and believe that the experience of leading world companies in the sphere of information and communication technologies will be extremely useful when applied in state management and the development of civil society in Ukraine,” said Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky at the laboratory opening.

“This project demonstrates Telenor’s commitment to participate in developing both mobile services and society at large, being a strategic investor in Ukraine. We care about the development of democracy, and this contribution to build competence among Ukrainian civil servants is an integral part of this process. This educational program is designed to give government officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations in Ukraine access to the best IT skills and knowledge from around the world. Telenor would like to thank the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Ukraine, for the opportunity to cooperate on this project,” said Baksaas.

Ukrainian federal and local government officials, representatives of non-governmental organisations, and employees of state-owned companies will participate in training courses at two of Ukraine’s leading universities. The educational programme will include courses on modern management techniques and modernisation of the public sector, educational modules devoted to e-government, implementation of new technologies in state management as well as features of state management in European Union countries.
