Teligent provides PLDT/SMART with a revolutionary convergent platform

The leading telecommunications provider in the Philippines, PLDT/SMART, has recently launched its first services on the Teligent P90/E convergent platform. This new platform allows PLDT/SMART to swiftly and cost efficiently introduce new services, packages and service bundles to its customers. The platform allows PLDT/SMART to rate and charge all calls in real-time on the fixed network and holds the prospect for future convergence with mobile and other services.

As a true convergent platform it also enables seamless integration with NGN/VoIP and mobile networks hence this is an important first step to achieve true service and network convergence as a path towards IMS.

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) is the incumbent and dominant fixed network carrier in the Philippines. SMART is a wholly owned subsidiary and the mobile arm of the company group. Together this leading telecommunications provider has over 2 million fixed and more than 20 million mobile customers. Since launching its GSM service in 1999, SMART has introduced a number of world-first wireless services and has been awarded several international prizes for their innovative service approach.

The launched services are a subset of last year’s substantial deal with PLDT/SMART (at the time confidential at the customer’s request). The initial frame agreement was for base installations of the Teligent P90/E platform, together with a company-wide network usage license. Another part of the agreement concerned NGN platforms for the mobile network.

Teligent’s deliveries are based on the patented telecom platform, Teligent P90/E, which separates network signalling, service execution and presentation to end-users. It conforms to the 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), and is adapted for use in a wide variety of networks, from traditional fixed and mobile networks to the emerging market of VoIP based next generation networks. The Teligent P90/E is used in various configurations by a large number of leading carriers in the international telecommunications market, including BT, Cingular, Telefónica, Telekom Malaysia, TeliaSonera, Verizon and Vodafone.
