Local officials have received a $6.8 million dollar grant to remove toxic lead paint and other health threats from homes in Minneapolis and elsewhere Hennepin County.

A city-county taskforce on childhood lead poisoning prevention secured the funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), explained the local Star Tribune. The taskforce has already reduced the number of children exposed to high lead levels by an impressive 67 percent.

However, Hennepin County still has roughly 800 to 1,200 children under 6 years old living with elevated lead levels, the primary source of which is paint.

Children are at the greatest risk for lead poisoning, because they are still developing and their small bodies would contain higher concentrations than adults. Complications resulting from lead poisoning are learning disabilities, mental retardation, behavioral problems, lowered intelligence, stunted growth, and hearing impairment.

“EMSL Analytical, Inc. congratulates the Minneapolis/Hennepin County taskforce on their work for such a worthy cause,” says Joseph Frasca, Senior VP at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “As a laboratory providing lead testing services in Minneapolis, we have helped make homes safer for children in the past and recognize the necessity of the project.”
