• International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) convened for the first time in Germany

Teltow - More than 100 internationally renowned surgeons and researchers met from 25-27 August 2011 at the Rostock University Anatomical Institute. During the three-day practical course organised by the ICRS the latest therapeutic advances were demonstrated in lectures, live operations and workshops chaired by international specialists.

“We have tried to give an objective representation of the full breadth of cartilage reconstruction surgery, based on the state of current academic research, and to illustrate it with the best surgeons and researchers in the corresponding fields”, explained course director PD Dr. med. habil. Peter Cornelius Kreuz, senior consultant at the orthopaedic university clinic in Rostock. “At the congress this entailed presentations of the most diverse range of biological therapies for patients young and old suffering from cartilage damage. They included demonstrations of stem cell-based methods, osteochondral therapies, autologous cartilage reconstruction procedures and biomaterials but also of very different biomechanical corrective operations such as osteotomies and soft-tissue balancing for a homogeneous distribution of pressure and weight in the knee joint”, added PD Dr. Kreuz.

The autologous chondrocyte transplantations (ACT) also featured the cartilage cell products from co.don AG. co.don AG is a partner of the congress and has been carrying out research since the 1990s into regenerative biotechnology aimed at the preservation of the joint. More than 4,000 patients have already been treated with the patented co.don procedure. “It was a natural choice for us to support the leading international joint specialists in carrying out these practical courses”, commented Dr. Baltrusch, CEO of co.don AG. “We are delighted that his high-calibre association has met for the first time in this form in Germany and that we had the opportunity to convince even more physicians of our gentle and effective ACT-3D method.”

The International Cartilage Repair Society was established at the end of the 1990s in Switzerland with the aim of fostering a worldwide exchange between scientists and doctors. The participants at this year’s congress included Prof. Lars Peterson, who some 20 years ago was the first person to implant cultivated cartilage cells into a human knee. The cartilage cell transplantation enables the regenerative treatment of defective articular cartilage in knee, hip, ankle, elbow and shoulder joints. The objective is to preserve the joint and therefore to postpone or avert the use of a prosthesis altogether.

The International Cartilage Repair Society provides a forum for experts from all over the world to network. They are pioneers and innovators in the field of regenerative and personalised medicine. “Focused research is needed to develop therapeutic concepts for different types of cartilage damage, which given the appropriate biological and biomechanical parameters of the joints can prevent arthritis”, explains PD Dr. Kreuz.

About co.don® AG:

The cell-based biological drugs (autologous cell transplants for articular cartilage and intervertebral disks) are produced without the use of antibiotics, growth factors and genetic engineering. The Management Board of co.don® AG is made up of Dr Andreas Baltrusch (CEO) and Ms Vilma Siodla (COO).
