Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were charged with the murder of two men during a robbery attempt in South Braintree, MA, on April 15, 1920. Both men were followers of Luigi Galleani, an Italian anarchist who advocated revolutionary violence. They were convicted on July 21st 1921 after a five-hour jury deliberation. The two were sentenced to death. Many people believed these men were wrongly convicted and demonstrations were staged protesting their convictions. Some believe their fate was influenced by anti-immigrant and anti-Italian bias.

Most of the FBI files date from 1921 to 1927. Many were created during the murder trial and include information about the murder charges and the trial itself. The material is composed of FBI memorandums, letters, reports, newspaper clippings, and other related material. The coverage contained in the files includes efforts in support of Sacco and Vanzetti after their convictions. Sacco and Vanzetti were executed on August 23rd, 1927.

Memos show that in 1951 the FBI undertook a review of the files and its involvement in the case, after accusations of improprieties were made against the Bureau.
