NRG Energy Announces Scholarship Winners

PRINCETON, NJ; —NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NRG) named four outstanding college-bound students as the first recipients of the NRG Howard Cosgrove Scholarship, which awards $50,000 to each recipient, paid out in amounts up to $12,500 per year. The scholarship is open to children of active NRG employees and awarded solely on the basis of merit, as evidenced by superior academic performance and exemplary non-academic achievement.

“These four outstanding students share an inspiring amount of passion and drive—not only to succeed, but to contribute to creating a better world,” said NRG President and CEO David Crane “Together they represent a diversity of backgrounds, talents and pursuits that will help propel them through their careers in higher education and beyond. We look forward to following their achievements as they carry the honor of being our inaugural Cosgrove scholars.”

Three of the four winners are from the Houston, Texas area—Mariah Berry of Richmond, whose father works at WA Parish Electric Generating Station; Katherin Parra Hernandez of Tomball, whose mother works at Reliant Energy; and Sadie Sacra of Needville, whose father works at NRG’s ecocenter at the Cedar Bayou Electric Generating Station. The fourth winner is Dominique Ryan of Queensland, Australia, whose father works at the Gladstone Power Station.

The NRG Howard Cosgrove Scholarship honors Howard Cosgrove, the Company’s chairman of the board and his lifetime of support for educational organizations. A resident of Rockland, Del., Mr. Cosgrove has served as chair of the United Negro College Fund Annual Campaign of Delaware, on the Delaware State School Board, and Chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Delaware.

The winners were chosen on the basis of merit by the NRG Howard Cosgrove Scholarship Committee, a select group of prominent leaders in the areas of education, philanthropy and private industry. Seated on this year’s committee are: Holly Burks Becker, Director, College Counseling, The Lawrenceville School; Barbara Byrne, Vice Chairman, Investment Banking, Barclay’s Capital; Nancy Kieling, President, Princeton Area Community Foundation (Chair); and Jason Klugman, Director, Princeton University Preparatory Program.
