TestAmerica Provides Current Updates on EPA’s Stationary Source Audit Program

Maria Friedman, TestAmerica’s Quality Assurance Manager of the Los Angeles laboratory, will present the latest developments in the privatization of the U.S. EPA’s Stationary Source Audit Program (SSAP) at the 2011 National Environmental Monitoring Conference (NEMC). The presentation will be held on August 15th in Bellevue, WA.

Stationary source testing is a field of environmental monitoring that measures the emissions of air pollutants from stationary sources, such as factories and power plants. To gauge the accuracy and effectiveness of this testing, the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation administers the SSAP. Audit samples must be analyzed along with samples collected for regulatory compliance. The analysis helps the regulatory agency determine the validity of compliance test results.

On September 13, 2010, the EPA finalized rule changes to the SSAP, allowing accredited providers to supply audit samples, and requiring stationary sources to obtain and use audit samples provided by these accredited providers. The former practice involved audit samples being attained from the EPA. Providers become accredited to standards established by The NELAC Institute (TNI). Ms. Friedman will provide an overview of these standards and TNI’s Stationary Source Audit Sample Program.

Ms. Friedman has 17 years of experience in ambient air analytical methodologies. She has been an active participant in TNI since 2005, when she joined TNI’s Information Technology Committee, and currently is the Chair of TNI’s Stationary Source Audit Sample Expert Committee, formed over three years ago to create standards to support the privatization of EPA’s audit sample program.
