Highland Associates Presented with Lumen Award for Lighting Design of ABKCO Records

(New York, NY) Highland Associates was presented with a prestigious Lumen Award for the lighting design of ABKCO Music & Records (New York, NY) during the 43rd annual Lumen Award gala held on June 8th at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Hosted by the New York City Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IESNYC), the highly anticipated Lumen Awards celebrate creative excellence in Lighting Design.

The IESNYC presented a LUMEN CITATION for the “Simple and Playful use of Light” executed by RS Lighting in collaboration with Highland Associates for ABKCO Records. The LUMEN CITATION was accepted during the 2011 Lumen Award ceremony by Randy Sabedra of RS Lighting Design, who worked in collaboration with the Architectural & Interior Design team of Highland Associates: Glenn Leitch, Elizabeth DeMello, Eric Scott, and Deborah Lorenzo. A LUMEN CITATION is a special recognition for an art installation, technical detail, a portion of a single project or a temporary installation.

“Art as light and light as music” was the lighting inspiration for Randy Sabedra of RS Lighting. The design provides a unique illumination scheme for maximizing daylight and expanding spatial boundaries. Highland Associates’ Glenn Leitch, AIA, project principal and design director noted, “The lighting design was a unique collaboration simultaneously exploiting the architectural planning efforts, emphasizing the owner’s collections, and integrating the lighting seamlessly to create a daring spatial experience.”

For this music company’s work place, the musical metaphor was ingeniously expressed in the lighting design: a microphone chandelier adds sparkle, ceiling domes are laid out to resemble a “drum kit”, a curved cove mimics layered sheet music, a continuous cove illuminates the space, and a back lit ceiling spills light into the offices as an architectural cloud.

Architect Glenn Leitch embraced the rich heritage of ABKCO Records, a music industry icon, and let their history resonate throughout the design process. Lighting Designer Randy Sabedra continued the architectural story-telling through ingenious lighting design.

Both Highland Associates and RS Designs are proud recipients of the 2011 Lumen Citation for their “Simple and Playful Use of Light” for ABKCO Music & Records.
