5Fu - Chemo test in Urine
Up to 8% of the world population is unable to metabolize the most popular anti-cancer drug - 5Fu as the most used chemotherapy drug is a pyrimadine based drug and can be detected through urine. Currently the only lab in the US that offers this service is based in Troy, Michigan. Furthermore the lab can help with dosing the chemo drug 5Fu.
The reason that 5Fu is so deadly is due to an enzyme deficiency that increases the half life of the drug and instead of being metabolized in 6 hours can continue for several days. Only 1% of people actually taking the drug are at serious risk, however the other 7% do suffer enormously and this problem can be detected prior to taking the drug and the dosage accordingly adjusted.
For the 1% who would die there are other drugs that can be used or there is a better chance of survival if they took 1mg or less to determine resistance.
