Cleaning Manufacturer Fined After Truck Seriously Injures Worker

WEBWIRE

A cleaning products firm has been given a substantial fine after a worker sustained serious injuries in a truck accident. His employer, Revelholme Marketing Ltd, was investigated by the HSE (health and safety executive) and found guilty of breaching basic health and safety law.

The incident occurred when the worker was helping to load a lorry using a stacker truck. The vehicle hit the curb and fell on top of the employee, causing permanently impaired vision and severe injuries to the skull and cheekbone. Subsequently, the worker remained in hospital for 10 days and was unable to work for 3 months. Although the man was eventually able to return to work, it was reported that he still suffers from the side effects of his injuries.

The three day trial took place in Nottingham Magistrates Court where the cleaning products firm was found guilty of breaching Regulation 4(3) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. The court ordered the company to pay a fine of £5,000 and added costs of £18,000.

Speaking after the trial, HSE inspector Stuart Pilkington commented on the importance of considering health and safety in the work place: “Companies need to ensure that the work equipment they use, such as stacker trucks, is suitable for the task, and for the conditions in which it is used.”

The incident serves as a reminder for many businesses that effective health and safety procedures are paramount. Helen Grieves, of Grieves Solicitors added:

“Accidents like this prove that a safe working environment is vital for every business. As work accident specialists, we see many accident claims that have occurred due to negligent health and safety precautions. It is reassuring to see those that don’t meet the standards needed to prevent unnecessary suffering are being reprimanded appropriately.”
