Rottenstein Law Group Supports FDA Decision to Investigate Dangers of Fosamax and other Bisphosphonate Drugs

WEBWIRE

(New York, NY, July 19, 2011) The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from the severe side effects of the drug Fosamax, is pleased that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has decided to begin an in-depth investigation of the benefits and dangers of bisphosphonate drugs.

According to a July 8 article published in the Wall Street Journal, an FDA advisory panel will meet on September 9 to “discuss the long-term safety of drugs used to treat osteoporosis.” Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become porous, brittle, and slow to heal from injury.

The FDA panel will discuss a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates, which have been associated with a rare type of thigh fracture and a condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw, thought to be caused by prolonged use of the drug. The drugs include Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax and Reclast.

Last year, the FDA strengthened warning labels on the drugs and advised doctors to periodically evaluate patients who have been taking the drugs for longer than five years. Used by approximately 5 million Americans, bisphosphonates are taken to slow or stop the progression of osteoporosis, helping to increase bone density. There have been at least 300 reports of a rare type of femur fracture in patients who have been taking the drug for longer than five years, as reported by the Journal.

The FDA has stated that it is not clear if bisphosphonates were the cause of the fractures or if there is a specific time frame for use of the drugs. The Journal article cites speculation by some bone researchers who feel the drugs may cause brittle bones that may be more susceptible to fractures if the drugs are taken over a prolonged period.

The Rottenstein Law Group advises anyone with a friend or family member who has been prescribed Fosamax or another osteoporosis drug to recommend to that person that he or she consult a physician immediately, then speak to a qualified Fosamax lawyer. The Rottenstein Law Group lawyers have a total of more than 25 years of experience fighting for the rights of clients who have suffered harm due to the negligence of powerful corporations. Affected individuals are advised to keep apprised of the latest news concerning the Fosamax femur fracture lawsuits by checking the Fosamax Femur Fracture Lawsuit Information Center for updated information, as well as for detailed information about side effects.
