Leading food testing laboratory now offers services to analyze food for radiation contamination following the nuclear disaster in Japan

Cinnaminson, NJ

Several months ago, it was reported that food products including beef, spinach, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, tea, milk, plums and fish were found to be contaminated with cesium and iodine as far as 360 kilometers from Dai-Ichi. Recently, it was also reported that about 963 pounds (437 kilograms) of beef from a farm in Minami-Soma city, 30 miles from the stricken Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear station was contaminated by radiation from Fukushima vicinity and unfortunately has been eaten by consumers in Japan. This has intensified food-safety concerns and has brought criticism against a Japanese government testing program that checks only selected products.

Following the nuclear disaster in Japan there has been a dramatic increase in the number of requests to perform Gamma Spectroscopy analyses. In response, EMSL Analytical is pleased to announce that they are now accepting radiological samples to test food products, soils, vegetation and water matrices. Some samples are able to be processed in as short as one day. The ability to measure Gamma isotopes that may have been released from the Japanese nuclear power plant allows EMSL to measure for things such as Cesium-134, Cesium-137, Iodine-131 and other radioactive elements.

“EMSL is pleased to be able to expand our offerings for analyzing radioactive samples,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL. “In addition to this most recent offering by EMSL Analytical, the laboratory announced last year that it was accepting samples for polarized light microscopy (PLM) for radioactive asbestos samples. This service is essential for analyzing samples from facilities that contained radioactive materials, such as nuclear power plants and nuclear powered naval vessels that are being remediated to remove hazardous asbestos containing materials,” he continued.

EMSL Analytical has been offering environmental testing services since 1981. The company has over 30 laboratories across the United States and Canada that offer a variety of environmental testing services and sampling supplies and products.
