The European IT services provider TietoEnator and Ericsson Enterprise are embarking on a strategic cooperation within the fields of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and Automatic Meter Management (AMM). The cooperation will result in the creation of a full end-to-end provider of automatic meter reading and management solutions. The joint offer will be available to the global utility market.

Energy consumption invoicing based on real measurement values instead of estimates is becoming mandatory in an increasing number of countries. In Sweden and Italy, legislation is setting the pace for full deployment of the automation by 2009. As a result, there is a clear demand for a turnkey provider with end-to-end capability and the sustainability to carry out large infrastructure projects.

The strategic cooperation combines TietoEnator’s expertise in the energy sector, system integration and business process management with Ericsson’s mobility and enterprise communication experience. The joint offer involves creating and providing services.

“The whole utility sector will be undergoing major changes in the coming years. Development of automatic meter reading and automatic meter management will play a major role in this, since the entire value chain will be fully digitalised - from meter reading to cash. By combining Ericsson’s global strengths with TietoEnator’s proven industry knowledge in energy, telecom R&D and banking, we believe we will be able to build a strong global operation. Our express target is to raise the level of self-service in consumer transactions to over 90%, which is precisely what we have done in retail banking over the past ten years,” said Pekka Viljakainen at TietoEnator.

“Ericsson is able to leverage its key capabilities in managed services and mobile machine-to-machine communication in this new and fast-growing market,” said Urban Gillström, president of Ericsson Enterprise. “We can really help utilities to protect revenues and reduce costs by mobilizing business processes through mobile technology and related expert services.”

For TietoEnator, cooperation with Ericsson Enterprise supports the company’s strategy of focusing on a fully digitalised value chain for the utility industry. TietoEnator is currently a leading provider in the Swedish automatic meter reading and management market, based on the agreement with the utility company E.ON signed in December 2005. Ericsson holds the same position in Italy based on its delivery to Acea.
