Utilities and Water Companies Turn to Mycometer’s BactiQuant®Water Technology
Water companies and various industries have been increasingly utilizing the BactiQuant®Water method developed by Mycometer to identify bacterial contaminants in water. The BactiQuant®Water is a relatively new patented method that provides water companies and industry with a rapid method to estimate total bacteria in water samples. The method is well suited for HACCP systems and Water Safety Plans.
With BactiQuant®Water, bacterial contaminants can be concentrated from large volumes of water allowing low analysis time (10-30 minutes) even at relatively low bacterial concentrations. BactiQuant®Water can be applied to a range of liquid samples including: potable water, processed water, CIP (cleaning in place) and recreational water. Other liquids include: extracts of a solid material or slurries, suspended or solubilized surface samples and liquid industrial products.
BactiQuant®Water technology was recently chosen to provide analytical testing for a project being conducted by the Water Research Foundation. The project, An Operational Definition of Biostability for Drinking Water, aims to develop a practical operational definition of biologically stable drinking water. In addition, it aims to provide guidance for water professionals on optimizing water treatment prior to its distribution.
“An important feature of the BactiQuant®Water is that it quantifies total suspended bacteria as well as bacteria located on particles. This makes it an ideal analytical method for the research being conducted by the Water Research Foundation,” reported Lisa Rogers, President of Mycometer, Inc. (USA). “Other test methods cannot measure the particle bound bacteria although more than 90% of the bacteria in a drinking water sample are located on particles. It has been well documented that there is a direct relation between water bio-stability and the presence of particle bound bacteria,” she continued.
The real value of monitoring microbiological water quality lies in the early detection of changes from normal conditions, based on frequent, long-term monitoring. Therefore, the starting point for gaining the full potential value of the BactiQuant technology is to establish baselines for normal operations at Critical Control Points.
