Tourism Industry Links to Landmarks for Promotion.

We’ve all heard the old joke about buying the Brooklyn Bridge.  Now a new company is creating an exciting virtual world where businesses can actually do just that.

The landmarksforsale.com site will attract travel and tourism industry clientele  that can purchase a landmark to promote their services to potential customers.

Global icons such as the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, the Sydney Opera House, and, of course, the Brooklyn Bridge, will be ‘on sale’ starting tomorrow, July 1 (8:00pm GMT -5:00).  “We expect competition to be fierce for the rights to the best-known landmarks, but as there is no limit to the landmarks accessible from the site, smaller businesses will also be able to use it to promote themselves,” said Governor Martin.

Buyers will be entitled to submit a URL and up to 160 characters of text to appear at the bottom of their landmark.

With the ability to travel the world via mouse clicks, site visitors can use landmarksforsale.com to plan their real world excursions and vacations, whether they are interested in exploring the next town or another continent.

In this new virtual world, everything is for sale, although certain landmarks will be handled with sensitivity, with proceeds from their sale going to nominated charities.  For example, UNICEF has been earmarked to receive the proceeds from the sale of the Statue of Liberty.

Hotels, restaurants, car rental agencies, souvenir shops and tour companies are among the many different sorts of businesses expected to tap into this innovative way to promote themselves.
