Old Navy Partners with Operation: Care and Comfort for Third Year in Nationwide Program

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – In honor of military troops and their families and to celebrate the 2011 Independence Day, Old Navy today announced that its entire U.S. fleet of about 1,000 stores will host Operation Troop Donation: a donation drive from July 1 – 4 to collect essential items needed by the men and women serving our country, away and at home.

Shop in stores and donate suggested items like basic tees, underwear, socks and flip flops, or make a cash donation with Old Navy matching up to a total of $100,000. Items such as unused personal care items (e.g. hand sanitizer, lip balm, sun screen, soap) are also being collected by armed services volunteers at all Old Navy locations, which will then be sorted, packaged and shipped to troops by Operation: Care and Comfort.

“Operation Troop Donation” began in April 2009 in the San Francisco Bay Area with a limited numbers of stores and expanded to all US Old Navy stores in 2010 due to the overwhelming interest and support of the program from customers. Once again, this year, all of Old Navy’s fleet of stores across the country will participate.

Old Navy customers who participate by making a donation whether in product or cash will receive a 10 percent discount off their entire purchase in-store that day.

“Operation: Care and Comfort is thrilled to continue ‘Operation Troop Donation’ with Old Navy in 2011,” stated President and Co-founder Julie DeMaria. “The enthusiastic support by the public to our cause is humbling, and the outpouring of gratitude from our military personnel abroad and at home has been tremendous. We can’t wait to do it again, and thank Old Navy for their ongoing support of our service members, Veterans and their families.”

“Old Navy is proud to continue our support of the men and women who serve our country,” said Tom Wyatt, president of Old Navy. “Operation Troop Donation is a great way to allow our customers to show their support as well.”

In 2010, ‘Operation Troop Donation’ resulted in tens of tons of donations that were moved across the country by train and truck - 188 pallets in all - to San Jose, CA where Operation: Care & Comfort volunteers sorted and boxed the donations at a week-long event. Items were donated to deployed troops as well as to Veterans hospitalized in V.A. hospitals in California, and to military families. In addition, Old Navy shipped 240,000 shower shoes to Iraq, Afghanistan and large military bases in the U.S. and almost one million Old Navy Flag tee shirts to large military bases in the U.S.
