20-year SAS veteran and Cary City Council representative receives national honors

CARY, NC – SAS Health Care Center Director Gale Adcock and 49 other nurse practitioners from across the country will be recognized next week for leadership and outstanding contributions to health care through nurse practitioner (NP) education, policy, clinical practice or research. Adcock is being recognized for her contributions to practice and policy. The 50 honorees will be inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) at the organization’s annual convention in Las Vegas on June 24.

“The opportunity to design and grow SAS’ corporate primary care practice has been a perfect platform to showcase what nurse practitioners can do. The SAS model is now widely regarded as a successful and innovative approach to health care delivery,” explains Gale Adcock. “I have also been privileged to serve in many elected and appointed policy positions in nursing and health care for over 30 years. Becoming an AANP Fellow is a career high for a nurse practitioner.”

Fellows are considered visionaries and participate in an annual think tank to strategize about the future of nurse practitioners and health care. The new Fellows will continue to demonstrate leadership and contribute to the mission of the AANP.

“In my 20 years at SAS, I’ve been able to combine my clinical role with so many remarkable and rewarding opportunities,” continues Adcock. “The best aspect of my job is its variety; no two days are alike. Being the corporate health services director has required me to develop strong skills in writing and speaking; program design and implementation; budgeting; consensus building; problem solving; and leadership.”

Adcock’s first two years at SAS were spent as a staff nurse practitioner. In addition to other duties, she has continued to see patients since becoming the director in 1994, caring for hundreds of patients over the years.

“Being part of an individual’s or family’s life for two decades is an incredible journey and a true blessing,” she observes.

During Adcock’s tenure as director, the SAS Health Care Center has expanded both its facilities and staff, and transitioned to a full-service primary care practice for more than 11,000 individuals of all ages.

Adcock lives in Cary with her husband and two teenage sons. She was elected to the Cary Town Council in 2007.
