The Latest Hi-Fi Trend: Space Saving

Our lifestyles and living spaces continue to change, but our love for music always remains. However, as the digital age dawns and the modern home focussed on minimalism and space saving solutions, traditional hi fi is also changing for being in danger of getting left behind, reports Doug Brady Hi Fi.

Established in 1960, the hi fi specialist has seen the latest trends in musical reproduction come and go, then come back around again. But as we continue to towards the digital age of technology, hi fi is getting not only better, but also much smaller.

“You used to have all your hi fi separates stacked up with two floor standing or stand mount speakers either side of your living room,” began Stephen Oakes, one of Doug Brady’s hi fi experts. “Then everything was integrated into a single unit, those units then became smaller over time and now even the speakers are much smaller too.”

While consumers became accustomed to the miniaturisation of personal stereos as they progressed from walkmans to MP3 players, manufacturers saw opportunities to reduce the size of their products, making them far more practical and cost effective.

Yet, despite their small size, they perform just as perfectly as their predecessors in a modern living space.

However, the modern living space is statistically smaller, resulting in all manner of innovative storage and space saving solutions as well as wireless, streaming media devices and integrated units.

As room sizes have decreased in home environments, interest in space saving solutions has risen exponentially.

“This year we’ve seen a huge interest in ceiling speakers and in wall speakers,” added Oakes. “People are adamant about getting their speakers out the way to make the most of their living room space.”

Home improvement remains a high priority for manly, due to the stagnant nature of the housing market. So while many are unable to upsize, they are achieving the next best thing by maximising the size of their rooms by minimising their hi fi systems and speakers.

Wireless streaming is also on the rise, so while portable digital technology continues to grow, hi fi remains as important part of the modern, minimalist home, blending aesthetics with high quality musical reproduction, and most importantly, without taking up too much space.
