Symantec Positioned as a Visionary in the Mobile Device Management Software Magic Quadrant

WEBWIRE

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – – Symantec Corp. today announced that it has been positioned by Gartner Inc. in the Visionary Quadrant of the 2011 Magic Quadrant for Mobile Device Management (MDM) Software report1.

According to the Gartner report, enterprise MDM software helps enterprises manage the transition to a more complex, mobile computing and communications environment by supporting security, service, software and inventory management across the exploding number of corporate and personal owned mobile smartphones and tablets.

Symantec Mobile Management, the solution evaluated as part of the Gartner report, gives organizations dealing with these changing environments the necessary tools to increase IT efficiency and improve end-user productivity.

“Enterprises of all sizes are looking for capabilities to manage the influx of mobile devices and deal with the evolving nature of mobile applications and data,” said Rob Greer, vice president, product management, Enterprise Security, Symantec. “Our complete MDM solution, coupled with our security expertise, allows enterprises to go beyond the basics of lock and wipe and confidently embrace personally owned devices. We believe our position as a visionary in the Magic Quadrant confirms our product capabilities and strategy to address mobile devices as endpoints.”

Gartner reports that there were more than 30 global smartphone vendors and more than 10 mobile operating-system platforms by 3Q10, although the top four (Apple, Android, RIM and Symbian) controlled 89 percent of the total market. Most adopting companies that had previously standardized on a mobile platform now need to support multiple operating systems, with Apple and Android having become more popular.

The diverse operating systems and personally owned devices are putting a strain on enterprises. IT managers’ concerns about the security and compliance of information and infrastructure remain the same irrespective of the devices being used: smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop. Symantec is in a unique position to help manage all these core assets and endpoints efficiently with an integrated platform, providing enterprises with peace-of-mind from both a security and compliance perspective.

Symantec Mobile Management provides strong and complete policy management across the widest range of mobile platforms. Functionality around centralized control, user enrollment, configuration management, application distribution and helpdesk management facilitate comprehensive lifecycle management of devices irrespective of the type and ownership. In addition to MDM, Symantec’s mobility portfolio helps secure remote access using strong authentication and helps to protect information using encryption, data loss prevention and anti-malware. As these capabilities are built on a scalable platform used to manage thousands of endpoints, enterprises can enable large mobile deployments confidently and efficiently.

“The MDM market is quickly evolving,” notes the Magic Quadrant report, which positions vendors based on their ability to execute and completeness of vision. “The requirements and definitions are changing rapidly, and vendor offerings will evolve quickly and be even more capable and mature by next year. High demand is creating a frenzy of development, as well as hope.”

Symantec Mobile Management is now available and can be purchased directly from Symantec or through Symantec’s worldwide network of value-added authorized resellers, distributors and system integrators.
