Hydrogen peroxide plant to Uruguay and South Korean unit sold to Degussaheadwaters

9 May 2006, Kemira will build a hydrogen peroxide plant in South America, on the site of Botnia’s pulp mill, which is under construction in Fray Bentos, Uruguay. After this addition Kemira’s chemical island includes sodium chlorate, chlorine dioxide, oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Kemira’s investment will total over EUR 80 million.The start-up of the plants is scheduled for 2007.

The most of new production capacity in short-fibre pulp will be built in South America, which is able to supply the pulp producers with Eucalyptus fibre having a very fast growth capacity. Eucalyptus is especially suited for fine paper and tissue paper qualities.

Kemira, the world’s biggest pulp and paper chemical producer, is following it’s customers to their growth areas. Kemira has extensive experience and know-how in pulp bleaching, wet end chemistry and coating chemistry enabling to offer complete solutions to major pulp and paper producers in the world.

“The best available technology will be used in the construction of Kemira’s plants in Uruguay, and the plants will follow all the strict European as well as Uruguayan environmental norms. Hydrogen peroxide complements the selection of bleaching chemistry products which Botnia uses in its pulp bleaching process”, says Lauri Junnila, President of Pulp & Paper Chemicals Business Area.

Kemira sells its South Korean hydrogen peroxide unit to DegussaHeadwaters Korea for EUR 27.5 million. South Korean plant has served mainly customers outside pulp and paper industry which is Kemira Pulp & Paper Chemicals’ (PPC) primary customer sector. The unit’s annual turnover has been approximately EUR 20 million. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals.

The turnover of Kemira’s Pulp & Paper Chemicals business is approximately EUR 1.1 billion and the company has a payroll of 2,500 employees. Kemira is one of the world’s biggest producers of hydrogen peroxide used in pulp bleaching. Company owns hydrogen peroxide plants in Oulu (Finland), Helsingborg (Sweden), Rozenburg (the Neatherlands), Maitland (Canada) and has a joint venture (50/50) in Ube (Japan).
