Airline is Official Partner of the German Football Association for a further four years

Lufthansa – the “Airline for Sport” – is prolonging its commitment to football and has therefore extended its partnership with the German Football Association (DFB) until 2014. For the first time, Lufthansa, as the Official Partner of the DFB, will widen its cooperation to include the German women’s national football team. Lufthansa and the DFB made the announcement at a joint press conference held today in Frankfurt.

As Official Carrier, Lufthansa will fly the teams, trainers, staff and the delegation members of the men’s and women’s national teams to all the important matches and tournaments. Since the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup is being held in Germany, the team will take domestic flights to the match venues. Next year, Lufthansa will fly the DFB team to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012, and to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

For Lufthansa, the agreement includes extensive rights and DFB marketing services. For example, the Lufthansa logo will be present on all DFB advertising, while the DFB will provide content for the airline’s social media platforms. Moreover, Lufthansa and the DFB are planning joint activities, such as PR events with DFB representatives. A special highlight of the cooperation during the last contract period was the departure of the national team to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa aboard Lufthansa’s first Airbus A380.

Dr. Reinhold Huber, Senior Vice President Product & Marketing Lufthansa German Airlines, commented: “Lufthansa is and will remain the ‘Airline for Sport’. Our partnership with the German national squad, its fans and the German Football Association is very close to our hearts. In view of this year’s Women’s World Cup in Germany and the European Cup next year, football occupies an important place in our activities.”

DFB General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach added: “We are very pleased to have extended our trusting partnership with Lufthansa until 2014. In view of the European championship in Poland and Ukraine next year and, of course, the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, the travel lo-gistics for our national team is an essential factor. With its high standards, Lufthansa guar-antees the ideal preconditions for successful performances by our national team – as it has proved many times, most recently in South Africa in 2010.”

Lufthansa has maintained longstanding partnerships with the German Football Association (since 2005) and FC Bayern Munich (since 2004). The airline also sponsors the Lufthansa Final Four, as the German Handball Cup Final is known. In addition, Lufthansa is the National Sponsor of the German Sports Aid Foundation and for many years has been a partner of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). In the latter function, Lufthansa carries the German Olympic teams to the Olympic Games, while as a partner of the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) it also carries athletes to the Paralympics. Lufthansa is supporting Munich’s bid to host the Winter Olympic Games in 2018.
