Largest Single Asbestos Verdict Awarded

Last week it was announced that a Brookhaven, Mississippi man was awarded a $322 million verdict in what his lawyers report is the largest single asbestos verdict in the United States. The lawsuit was against two companies that the man claimed were responsible for his diagnosis of asbestosis at the age of just 30.

Also last week, a Texas couple filed suit against 10 companies that they claim exposed a man to asbestos during his years as a carpenter. The man alleges to suffer from an asbestos related illness.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Asbestos is a generic name given to a fibrous variety of six naturally occurring minerals that have been used for decades in thousands of commercial products.” The CDC goes on to state, “Persons occupationally exposed to asbestos have developed several types of life-threatening diseases, including lung cancer. Although the use of asbestos and asbestos products has dramatically decreased, they are still found in many residential and commercial settings and continue to pose a health risk to workers and others.”
