Predecessor Michael Lorenz to Bayer MaterialScience

Leverkusen, – Dr. Thomas Bieringer (43) has been appointed Managing Director of INVITE GmbH, effective July 1, 2011. The research company works on new production concepts for the “Factory of the Future”. The PhD physicist succeeds Michael Lorenz (47), who had been responsible as Managing Director for the technology center at Chempark Leverkusen since the joint venture between Bayer Technology Services (BTS) and Technical University Dortmund was established in 2010. Lorenz played a major role in the concept and development of the technology center, which is officially inaugurated in September 2011. He is assuming new duties at the Industrial Operations unit of Bayer MaterialScience.

Bieringer, who obtained his PhD from University of Bayreuth in the field of optical data storage in polymers, has been working at Bayer since 1997, including Central Research, Bayer Technology Services and Bayer MaterialScience. He has headed the Innovation section within the Corporate Development department of the Corporate Center since 2004. As spokesman of the Bayer Innovation Community, he was largely involved for the strategic alignment of the research units of the Bayer subgroups. Bieringer also enlarged the network to leading research institutions and ministries around the globe. He also teaches innovation management at the University of Cologne.

Technical University Dortmund is one of Europe’s leading faculties for biological and chemical engineering, and has a long history of collaboration with Bayer on numerous R&D projects. Both stakeholders of INVITE are participants in F³ Factory, a EUR 30 million EU research project coordinated by BTS. This project marks the first time that 25 partners from industry and academia have put aside their own interests to enter into a consortium dedicated to new technologies and production concepts. F³ Factory stands for “Flexible, Fast and Future Factory.” The consortium aims to strengthen the European chemical and pharmaceutical industry’s technological competence and global competitiveness in the long term through modular and more efficient and flexible production methods.
