Atos Origin and Chinese telecom equipment provider ZTE form joint venture to capitalize on growing Chinese energy market

WEBWIRE

Paris - Atos WorldGrid, an international entity of Atos Origin and a world leader in smart energy, has formed a joint venture with ZTE, a leading Chinese telecom equipment provider, in order to address the growing smart energy market in China. The Joint Venture will deliver advanced meter management solutions and other smart grid related IT services to Utilities in China. ZTE will run the day to day operations and Atos Origin will provide its innovative smart grid expertise. The new entity will have its own R&D capabilities to retain its technology edge. The joint venture will be headquartered in Nanjing, China.

Synergy effect
The two companies have worked together on several projects in Europe for more than three years and have recently been selected to set up and run a pilot project of 100,000 smart meters by 2012 in the South of China. Together, the two companies provide an unrivalled offering for the Chinese market. ZTE brings its communication platforms experience and a strong utilities customer base in China, while Atos WorldGrid provides its unique smart grid solution, which has been developed in France for ERDF’s 35 million smart meters. Atos WorldGrid’s global R&D centre in Grenoble, France, will contribute to transfer its smart grid expertise to China.

Growth potential China

The Chinese energy market presents huge opportunities for smart grid solutions, due to the forecasted growth in energy demand and the ever increasing pressure this will impose on the grid, amid growing concerns for the environment. This market requires sophisticated real time systems to manage millions of smart devices and their associated data flows.

Yang Ming, CEO of ZTE Utility: “As the utilities industry is on the verge of undergoing a revolution similar to the one which shook the telecom business a few years ago, ZTE is ready to play an active role in this market transformation together with Atos Origin”.

Gilles Grapinet, Senior Executive Vice President Global Functions of Atos Origin: “Creating this joint venture is an important step in our strategy to further grow our business in China. Through Atos WorldGrid, we have developed world class smart metering solutions that will help utilities in China to deploy proven green solutions that will offer advanced benefits to their customers”.
