Atlanta Legal Nurse Consultant Addresses Georgia And South Carolina Ambulatory Surgery Center Organizations

Atlanta, Georgia – Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen, registered nurse, was an invited speaker at the semi-annual conference of the Georgia Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (GSASC), and South Carolina Ambulatory Surgery Centers Association (SCASCA). The conference was held on March 10 & 11, 2011 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Buckhead/Atlanta, Georgia.

About the GSASC/SCASCA:

The Georgia Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers is a professional organization of medical doctors, administrators, and nursing managers who pursue medical, legal, nursing, and patient care issues impacting citizens, and ambulatory surgery centers in Georgia.

The South Carolina Ambulatory Surgery Center Association is a non-profit organization which meets to network and receive important industry updates. The organization is involved with the establishment of acceptable standards of care and outcomes, professional development, promotion of ambulatory surgery centers, exploration and promotion of new technologies and treatments, monitoring of state laws and regulation, and collaboration with other health care organizations.

The joint conference began with Sheri Russo of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency who discussed “Disaster Preparedness” for both the surgery center, and residences. Russo stressed that it should only take 2 or 3 hours to construct an effective disaster plan.

Dwayne Garriss, of the Georgia State Fire Marshall Office, informed attendees about “Preparing for a Fire Marshall Inspection.”

Angie McWhorter, project manager for the Harbin Clinic in northwest Georgia, a large multi-specialty outpatient clinic, moved on talking about incorporating electronic medical records into healthcare settings effectively.

Keynote speaker Andrew Hayek, MD of Surgical Care Affiliates, began the March 11 session with updates from his interactions with policy makers in Washington, DC, regarding the recession, and the upcoming healthcare reforms.

David Shapiro, MD with Ambulatory Surgery Company, LLC followed with “Hot Topics in the Industry” including healthcare reform, Medicare reimbursement, and ambulatory surgery center quality initiatives.

David Harkins of United Surgical Partners International continued with “Successful Managed Care Contracting.”

Concluding the conference, Liz Buddenhagen, Atlanta legal nurse consultant, presented “Risk Management in the Ambulatory Surgery Center.” Buddenhagen “demystified risk management,” and discussed how healthcare providers can prepare for deposition when involved with the legal system.
