Amsterdam awards installation of charging outlets to Nuon/Heijmans and Essent

WEBWIRE

‘s-Hertogenbosch – To meet the increasing demand for electric charging outlets, Amsterdam initiated a tendering procedure in 2010 for 1,000 public charging outlets. The combination Nuon/Heijmans, together with Essent, was awarded the contract for installing the charging posts. The contract spans a period of three years, including the supply of green power. Both parties can enter the market at the same time for the purpose of offering charging services to electric car users.

Additional charging outlets are required
In the near future, more and cheaper cars will be driving on Amsterdam’s streets. The City of Amsterdam is collaborating with various car manufacturers who will be bringing electric cars to market in 2011. Amsterdam is mainly expanding the charging network. Based on projected need, 1,000 public charging outlets will be added to the streetscape over the next three years. The new charging outlets will be able to accommodate the new and existing standard plug in the Netherlands (Type 2, Mode 3).

Background
The first public charging outlets in Amsterdam went into service on 6 November 2009. Currently, the city has more than 200 charging outlets, 100 of which are located on streets (installed by Nuon and the network manager Liander). Each public charging outlet has at least one fixed user. The charging cards of all providers are now compatible with every charging outlet in the Netherlands.

Electric Amsterdam
Amsterdam in 2015 is required to meet the European air quality standards. Electric transport benefits air quality because there are no local emissions of hazardous substances. Furthermore, the technology is significantly more efficient resulting in a reduction in the use of energy. Cars in Amsterdam are charged using green power generated from renewable energy sources.

Nuon and Heijmans partnership
Energy supplier Nuon is aware of the fact that due to the development of electric transportation, the energy needs of consumers and companies are changing. In Heijmans it has found a partner with a great deal of experience with working in public spaces and with the construction of above and below ground infrastructure. The two companies are complementary partners. Nuon supplies green energy and contributes its consumer service facilities. Heijmans will install and maintain the required infrastructure. Electric transportation is an excellent fit with Heijmans’ sustainability goals. Indeed, the latter will soon lead to an electric driving pilot within the company, among other things.
