Federal Government Plans to Reduce its Greenhouse Gas Pollution by 28%

WEBWIRE

In 2010, President Obama announced that the Federal Government would reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution by 28 percent by 2020. Reducing and reporting GHG pollution, as called for in Executive Order 13514 on Federal Sustainability, will ensure that the Federal Government leads by example in building a clean energy economy. Actions taken under this Executive Order spur clean energy investments that create new private-sector jobs, drive long-term savings, build local market capacity, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship in clean energy industries.

One advanced technology that can help reach the goals established by Executive Order 13514 is ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) for air conditioning equipment evaporator coil maintenance. Since 2003, UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI) has been on the forefront of developing UVGI technology for HVAC applications for energy savings and better indoor air quality.

“UVGI technology is a proven solution to improving energy efficiency in buildings,” reported Richard Hayes, President of UVDI. “Currently the United States General Services Administration (GSA) requires that UV equipment must be installed in cooling coil air-handling units for all new construction to maintain coil cleanliness and improve IAQ. This sustainable technology reduces air conditioning energy consumption by up to 15% and lowers maintenance costs while also providing healthier indoor air. It’s a real win-win situation for the government, taxpayers and the environment,” he continued.
