First Robotic Weight Loss Surgery Performed In Oklahoma

WEBWIRE

Using the very latest in surgical technology, Dr Russell Gornichec, an Oklahoma City bariatric surgeon, performed the first robot assisted weight loss surgery in Oklahoma several months ago. And to date, Dr. Gornichec and Deaconess Hospital have performed twenty procedures using this new technology.

The robot does not perform the surgery itself, rather it is an extension of the surgeon’s own movements. The system scales the surgeon’s movements and translates them into precise motions to its robotic arms. The system offers the surgeon a clear field of vision with 3D technology and vivid colors, creating a truly realistic and natural experience. Typically, a surgeon will be standing, using long handled medical devices and looking away at a conventional television screen when performing laparoscopic surgery. With the da Vinci system, the surgeon is seated comfortably and can control camera and surgical devices without moving or looking away.

“I feel that the utilization of robotic surgery will make higher-risk procedures safer and will result in fewer complications and less postoperative discomfort for the patient,” says Gornichec of the new technology. Oklahomans now have yet another minimally invasive option in their fight against morbid obesity.

Weight Loss Surgery is still the only proven long-term weight loss solution, when diet and exercise don’t work, for those suffering from morbid obesity. Today, the procedures have never been safer and new technology continues to offer the patient greater and safer surgical options.

Dr. Gornichec began practicing weight loss surgery in the Oklahoma Metroplex in 1999. He is the medical director of the weight loss program at Integris Baptist Medical Center and director of the Weight Loss Center of Oklahoma, www.weightlosscenterok.com. He also performs bariatric procedures at Deaconess and Lakeside Women’s hospitals.
