Joint Venture Announced Between Three Arizona Scrap Metal Recycling Businesses


Liberty Iron & Metal Holdings, LLC, Scholz A.G., Southwest Metal Industries, LLC and We Buy
Scrap, LLC announced today a joint venture consolidating their Phoenix, Arizona based
operations into a new company, Liberty Southwest Holdings, LLC. The entities of the new venture will continue to operate at their existing locations, providing five facilities in the Phoenix area to service its expanding customer base. All of the principals will remain active, bringing their diverse skills and experience in joining together to build a world-class scrap metal recycling

Liberty Southwest Holdings, LLC will combine a state of the art steel shredding facility with retail scrap locations, wire chopping and nonferrous processing and trading. “There is great balance achieved by integrating these companies,” said Co-President Henry Fleet. “We have worked closely together for several years and this is a natural progression for our businesses.”

Liberty Iron entered into a joint venture with Scholz A.G. in 2007 to expand operations in the North American market. Liberty Iron, a multi-generational family-owned business was founded in 1932. With the Arizona deal, Liberty and Scholz have completed three joint ventures in North America with other locations in Ohio and Chihuahua, Mexico. Scholz A.G. is a fifth generation family-owned business operating since 1872. Scholz is one of the largest privately-held global scrap metal companies with more than 30 partnerships throughout Europe, Northern Africa, Asia, Australia and North America.

Co-President Marc Olgin said the partnership with Southwest Metals and We Buy Scrap is in line with their overall business strategy. “The people involved in this deal share an overall philosophy of operating good family run businesses,” Olgin said. “We are excited that we are bringing together a very talented group of people.”

Scholz CEO Oliver Scholz explained, “Partnering with We Buy Scrap and Southwest Metals will strengthen our position in the Southwestern United States.”

We Buy Scrap has been an Arizona company since 2004, with three retail-based scrap locations in the Phoenix area. Recipient of the Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year award in 2005, the company has strong ties to Phoenix. “Arizona is a great place to do business and we take great pride in being involved with the local community,” said Principal Dan Rush.

Southwest Metal Industries was established in 2001 and is a leader in wire chopping and the processing and trading of nonferrous metals. Henry Fleet grew up in the scrap metal business with his father Barry being in the industry for more than 30 years.

Liberty Southwest will employ more than 150 people in Arizona. Its mission will be to provide the highest quality service and recycling options to individuals and businesses in the Southwestern
United States, providing a quality place of employment and maintaining strong community ties.
