Wisconsin Endorses UV Technology for Energy Savings and Utility Rebates

The State of Wisconsin recently endorsed ultraviolet (UV) technology by granting utility rebates to building owners and managers for incorporating UV systems in air handlers for evaporator coil disinfection. According to Focus on Energy, an organization that works with eligible Wisconsin residents and businesses to adopt cost effective energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, UV coil systems generate a 10% increase in coil heat transfer efficiency. The 10% efficiency improvement calculation is based, in part, from findings in the November 2006 ASHREA Journal article, “Study Verifies Coil Cleaning Saves Energy” and in part, from independent energy studies by the Focus on Energy organization.

According to UVDI, a leading manufacturer of UV disinfection systems, in most retrofit applications, evaporator coil disinfection result in efficiency gains almost immediately and generate a return of investment (ROI) in the 1 to 4 year range. In addition, the company claims:

• Electricity cost savings – up to 15% on installed systems through increased HVAC system cooling capacity and improved air flow.
• Maintenance savings - UV disinfection keeps evaporator coils and drain pans clean and avoids periodic manual cleaning.
• Improved indoor air quality - eliminates mold and bacteria sources that may contaminate air with obnoxious odors and can cause IAQ health concerns.
