World’s first Portable Shade Sail Structure set to revolutionise event hire industry

Australian shade structure building company Weathersafe Shades announced today an innovation that is set to take the function and event hire industry by storm – a portable, fully engineered, modular shade sail structure.

Developed in response to a call from the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC), looking to protect racegoers from the sun with a removable shade structure that had greater visual appeal than the traditional marquee and umbrella hire products, the structure was pioneered at the Adelaide Cup Race Day on Monday 14 March 2011.

Weathersafe CEO Tim Seymour-Smith believes the product will revolutionise the event hire industry, and open up possibilities for providing shade to function goers that have never previously existed.

“Traditional shade sail structures require extensive concrete footings to support the columns. Our innovation replaces that need with a system that is fully engineered, yet fully removable and requires absolutely no concrete,” said Seymour-Smith. “Events are no longer limited to marquee and umbrella products for the provision of shade. Our portable shade sail structure adds a dramatic visual appeal to events and functions that has never before been possible, and is extremely cost effective in terms of both short term and long term use.”

Jason Paech, Operations Manager for the SAJC, says: “The SA Jockey Club continually strive to bring a unique flavour to race events, with race goer comfort being a primary focus in line with our plans for numerous improvements on course over the next 1 to 2 years. To have played a part in the development of this structure with Weathersafe, and to have launched it at the Adelaide Cup at Allan Scott Park Morphettville, highlights our desire to create unrivalled, responsible race events for the absolute enjoyment of attendees.”

Featuring an Australian designed, patented footing system, the modular shade sail structure can be expanded indefinitely and upon removal leaves absolutely no trace of its prior existence. The installation and removal processes are very efficient, there is virtually no environmental impact, and shade sail colours can be selected to blend with the function theme or harmonise with existing surrounds.

“This is a truly unique Australian initiative with potential world wide application,” adds Seymour-Smith. “We are very excited by the prospects of this innovation and are looking forward to making it available to function goers everywhere.”
