WEBWIRE

WhatSellsBest.com, a website tracking rare and unusual auction items selling on eBay, is reporting bidding has passed $850,000 in an eBay auction, which appears to be selling the Space Shuttle Discovery.

The Discovery, the third of NASA’s fleet of reusable, winged spaceships, arrived at Kennedy Space Center in November 1983, and was recently retired as the world’s most flown spaceship, on March 9, 2011.

The sellers eBay listing described the Shuttle as; “used, with 148,221,675 freeway miles”, and as being sold with; “Fresh paint with minor scuffs and dings”.

According to James Massey, publisher of WhatSellsBest.com; "I’m not sure what’s happening in this auction, because I read the Shuttle (Discovery) was being sent to the Smithsonian. But, the auction has generated a ton of interest on eBay, with over 12,000 visitors so far.

UPDATE - March 15, 2011: Shortly after this story ran, the auction appeared to have either been canceled by eBay, or the seller. No further information for the reason behind the cancellation, is available at this time.
