According to a recent report in the Los Angeles Times, the bacteria that cause Legionnaires’ Disease have been discovered in a water source at the Playboy Mansion. This discovery follows a national media storm after approximately 200 people became ill after attending an event at the California landmark.

A number of people that attended an internet conference in early February also attended a party at the mansion before becoming ill. Public health officials have been investigating the outbreak of the illness and have reported that that they still haven’t ruled out other potential bacteria or illnesses that could have resulted in the outbreak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized in the U.S. each year due to Legionnaires’ Disease. This number may be just the tip of the iceberg as it is believed by many experts that most cases are not diagnosed.

The disease caused by Legionella, Legionnaires’ Disease, got its name after a 1976 outbreak at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia that sickened 221 people and caused 34 deaths. There is a milder form of the illness, known as Pontiac Fever, which causes flu like symptoms

EMSL Analytical, a leading provider of environmental testing services, provides analytical services to help prevent and identify Legionella. “The transmission of Legionella occurs via aerosols, when mist containing the bacteria is inhaled,” reported Diane Miskowski, Business Development Manager at EMSL Analytical. “Legionella can be found in lakes and streams, but most human infections occur from contaminated manmade sources such as hot tubs, cooling towers and potable water systems. The CDC reports that 5% to 30% of cases can result in death.”
