Through a 2011 New Jersey Grant Initiative, the Fund is Now Accepting Proposals from Charities Invested in Children

WAYNE, NJ – The Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund today announced plans to award up to $1 million to benefit nonprofit organizations supporting children in New Jersey during the 2011 calendar year. Through a statewide grant program, the Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund will help alleviate economic challenges and sustain organizations that favorably impact children across New Jersey, where both the Fund and Toys“R”Us, Inc. are headquartered.

The Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund is offering this New Jersey grant initiative during a period marked by declining donations from individual and foundation support, forcing nonprofit organizations in the state to reevaluate fundraising strategies and sources, staffing, special events and more, due to the current economic environment. According to a 2010 survey of 326 New Jersey 501(c)(3) organizations conducted by the Center for Non-Profits, 65% of respondents reported a previous funding source had informed them in 2009 that they would not be giving to their organization or would be giving less. In addition, more than 40% of the respondents reported frozen or cut salaries, and nearly a third reported staff cuts in 2010.

“As a New Jersey-based organization with a commitment to giving back to the communities we serve, we’re proud to launch this grant initiative to help lessen some of the challenges faced by New Jersey charities dedicated to helping children in need,” said Kathleen Waugh, Chairman, Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund. “The “R”Us family loves kids and through this program, we look forward to partnering with nonprofit organizations in the state that are aligned with our mission of keeping kids safe and helping them in times of need.”

Beginning today, proposals are being accepted from 501(c)(3) organizations for grants between $10,000 and $25,000 to support any of the following areas:keeping children safe; helping children in need, including financially disadvantaged children; assisting children with special needs; and providing resources for children and families in the event of natural or other disasters. To apply, nonprofit organizations must return complete submissions to the Toys“R”Us Children’s Fund by May 31. Organizations will be notified if they have been selected for a grant in October and grants will be issued prior to December 31.
