Deceased Hollywood Star’s Home Put Up for Sale
LA Testing offers mold and other indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services for homeowners and potential buyers to ensure homes are free of mold and other potential indoor contaminants.
In December of 2009, a young actress died at the age of 32. The star, Brittany Murphy, suffered a cardiac arrest and in March of 2010 her mother put the actress’ Hollywood Hills’ mansion up for sale. Just a month later it was taken off the market and in May, Simon Monjack, the deceased star’s husband also died.
According to the Toronto Star, both the deceased individuals died in part due to pneumonia combined with anemia. This prompted rumors that the home contained toxic mold. Reuters reported recently that the beautiful 8,000 square foot home was scheduled for a foreclosure auction last month, but Brittany’s mother was granted a two week extension to try to sell the home for a discounted price.
Rumors reported in the media of potential mold contamination have likely made the home more challenging to sell. Currently in California there are many homes across the state in the foreclosure process. Unfortunately many of these homes are not being maintained and are susceptible to problems due to water incursions and mold growth.
Any water damage and mold growth is also costly to remediate and for many of the foreclosed homes there is no budget for necessary remediation. LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading indoor air quality testing laboratory, provides analytical services and testing supplies to help identify microbial and chemical contamination in indoor environments. “The presence, and even perceived presence, of mold in a home can make it more difficult to sell,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Simple testing procedures can quickly determine if there is mold or other problems with a structure’s IAQ.”
