LA Testing provides consumer product testing services for lead and other heavy metals in consumer products to allow manufacturers to comply with California’s Prop 65.

Garden Grove, CA
Earlier this month it was reported that a California dietary supplement manufacturer has agreed to pay $2.65 million to settle civil charges related to the presence of lead in diet supplements. Prosecutors from ten counties in California brought the charges against the company and it is reported to be the largest settlement of its kind in California for unfair business practices involving a supplement manufacturer.

The supplement manufacturer has stated that none of their products contained unsafe levels of lead. However, California’s Proposition 65 “requires a warning label for any product that contains an identifiable amount of a chemical or heavy metal on a daily dose basis.” According to reports on the case, the Prop 65 threshold is exposure to more than a half a microgram of lead per day. According to prosecutors, two of the company’s products tested at levels 10 times the legal limit, while another showed 14 times the limit.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Lead poisoning is one of the most serious environmental health threats to children in the United States. Elevated blood lead levels can retard young children’s mental and physical development.”

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical, is a leading provider of lead and other heavy metal testing services. “Exposure to lead can cause a host of adverse health effects, including nerve damage and blood and brain disorders,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Lead is of special concern when dealing with small children and pregnant women as they are more susceptible to health problems. LA Testing can help manufacturers of products comply with the regulations in California’s Prop 65 with quick and affordable testing solutions.”
