CHICAGO - 25 April 2006 - The Jazz Age and the Lost Generation had Fitzgerald and Hemingway. Now Generation Y -- specifically the 60 million Americans born between 1981 and 1995 -- may have found their literary spokesperson.
Just don’t tell Marshall James that. "I only speak for myself. If people want to think of me as a spokesperson for my generation, that’s their business" the 22-year-old Chicago-born writer said. James is the author of "A word from Generation X or Y or XY or whatever the hell it is" an 8,000-word short story posted on www.GlassEyez.com. Visitors to the website can read the story for free.
GlassEyez.com is the official website of James’s yet-to-be-published 65,000-word book, Glass Eyez. The book is comprised of two novellas and four short stories. "A word from Generation X or Y or XY or whatever the hell it is" is the first story in the book.
Since the April 19 launch of his website, James has been inundated with emails from members of Generation Y. "It’s amazing how many email me and say, ’You’ve totally captured our world.’ I wonder where all these people were when I was in high school" James smiled. The entire text of Glass Eyez has been made available to several fans. "I thought it would be useful to gather opinions on the entire book. It’s all been a very encouraging experience" the promising writer said.
According to James, his book deals with the challenges of young adulthood, as well as life in present-day America.
A December 2003 article by Caren Lissner states that, "Generation Y, the teens and early twenty-somethings who are said to represent the biggest chunk of pop culture marketing power, have no one who has encapsulated their generation in their writing so far"
"I never set out to define or document my generation" said James. "As a writer, I think it’s very important to write about what you know about. I know what it’s like to be a young adult and that’s what I’ve written about. I’m aware of my limitations. If I wrote about retired life, for example, who would care to read it"
