Bay Area Beer Bloggers Choose Top Northern California Beers-Most Can Be Found During San Francisco Beer Week 2011
February 10, 2011 — San Francisco Bay Area, CA: With the start of the 3rd annual SF Beer Week this weekend, the Bay Area Beer Bloggers have released their own list of favorite Bay Area and Northern California beers.
The list features 70 beers arranged by style ranging from Double and India Black Ales to Imperial Stouts and Barley Wines. As showcased by SF Beer Week, Northern California is now as well known for its beer as it is for its wines. This is only fitting since San Francisco help spur the craft beer revolution almost 50 years ago when Fritz Maytag purchased a local brewery named Anchor, and in 1976, Jack McAuliffe built the New Albion Brewery, the first modern microbrewery in Sonoma.
As a result, today there are over 1,675 craft breweries in America, more than at any time since 1900. These small breweries make a positive impact on local communities and the economy, directly and indirectly contributing more than $25 billion dollars to the California economy.
To honor the Bay Area’s rich craft beer heritage, members of the Bay Area Beer Bloggers sampled countless local beers to choose our favorites. Many of these will be available during SF Beer Week and some can be purchased in bottles to be savored later. It is our hope that this list encourages everyone to try the many diverse beers from Bay Area breweries and will serve as a guide for your next beer tour. SF Beer Week 2011 will take place February 11-20 and features over 300 beer-related events, including special releases and food-pairing events, beer dinners, festivals, and even beer jogs and bike rides.
