Three TestAmerica Technical Experts to Speak at 2011 Battelle Conference

WEBWIRE

TestAmerica’s industry experts will give presentations addressing the methods and challenges involved with sediments and elutriate analysis at the Sixth International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments organized by Battelle. The three presentations will be given during the week of February 7–10, 2011 in New Orleans, LA.

Rusty Vicinie, General Manager, will describe the proper method selection for elutriate testing to measure the release of contaminants to the water column from sediment samples, and different applicable solutions involving the management of dredged material. An overview of elutriate methods, sample and matrix factors that can impact the analytical results, in addition to the adoption of current laboratory quality aspects, will also be discussed.

David Herbert, TestAmerica West Sacramento’s Business Development Manager, will present the results of a Sacramento River sediments survey for Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) and other endocrine disruptors (EDCs) found near the Sacramento wastewater treatment plant’s (WWTP) discharge site. TestAmerica’s method development has produced the needed method modifications to overcome complex matrices and achieve the necessary parts per trillion (ppt) PPCP detection levels to analyze sediment samples. TestAmerica’s survey of the Sacramento River employs the industry’s leading technology to characterize the PPCP and EDC contamination present in California’s largest river.

Dr. Mark Bruce, North Canton laboratory’s Technical Director, will provide a poster presentation on improving mercury speciation analysis from solid matrices. Utilizing EPA Method 1630, solid sample matrices are commonly converted to aqueous solutions through extraction techniques, however the data shows significant influence by a wide variety of solid matrices on the precision of analysis. Alternative sample preparation processes are being investigated to enhance extraction and minimize mercury species interconversions.
