Npower finds bright sparks at Carleton Community High School

Npower has joined together pupils from Carleton Community High School, Pontefract, along with engineers from the nearby Ferrybridge site, to take part in npower’s latest ’Enthuse’ day , a programme designed to inspire and engage pupils aged 12-14 years old in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

One hundred and fifty-nine Year 9 pupils participated in a range of hands-on activities, designed to help them think about the impact science and engineering has on their daily lives and helping them to develop their engineering and science related knowledge and skills.

The pupils were encouraged to think of ways to improve an existing electricity generation idea, product, or to design a completely new concept, before considering the very real problem of how to meet and reduce the UK’s future demand for energy.

Denis Bown, a training coordinator from RWE npower’s technical support group in Ferrybridge, was on hand to give advice and answer questions, he said, “The Enthuse events give young people an insight into what an engineer’s job entails and a chance for us to highlight the real opportunities a career in the energy industry offers. I hope we have inspired some of today’s pupils to consider engineering as a career option for the future.”

Jill Beavis, careers coordinator at Carleton Community High School, said, “The variety of activities gave the pupils an excellent insight into the diversity and challenges which might face an engineer. It was extremely useful in helping dispel the stereotypical notions some pupils have about engineering. Also, the opportunity to meet with staff from the power station has made today’s activities more relevant and real. It was wonderful to see how pupils of all abilities were engaged in the activities offered. The staff and pupils would like to thank the people from Enthuse and npower for their enthusiasm and hard work”.

Enthuse, part of the npower Brighter Futures Programme, aims to inspire young people from their first day at school to their first day at work. This is achieved by helping them to develop their skills and knowledge to make their own choices and empowering them to achieve their vision of a ’brighter future’ for themselves and for the environment.

Since the start of the Enthuse programme in 2007 the educational experience has reached out to over 8,000 students across the UK.
