Deep Brain Stimulation – No Miracle Cure for Majority of Depression Sufferers

WEBWIRE

The UK’s leading functional neurologist in the field of depression has cautioned depression sufferers not to raise their hopes of Deep Brain Stimulation being a ‘wonder’ cure.

Lincoln UK, based Nicole Oliver, DACNB, states that invasive treatments such as DBS could be potentially useful in extreme cases of severe depression. However, as shown in recent clinical trials in Bristol, DBS has yet to prove successful or free of side-effects.

In the vast majority of people with depression, better results can be achieved in a much less drastic way using a specific combination of non-invasive therapies; essentially physiotherapy for the brain.

Retraining and rehabilitating incorrectly functioning brain areas through non-invasive therapies forms the basis of what is known as functional neurology. Originally pioneered in the US, it has been used successfully to treat brain conditions in which groups of nerve cells are under or over-performing. Such conditions include depression, attention deficit disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Unlike current methods of treating depression, therapies recommended by a functional neurologist will be carefully prescribed according to the effect they have on different brain areas. This is only done after a thorough diagnosis identifies exactly where in the brain the problem lies, reducing the need for trial-and-error treatments.

Nicole Oliver is the UK’s leading functional neurologist in the field of depression and is one of only 13 people in the UK to hold the Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board (DACNB) qualification. Nicole also holds DC, MChiro, BSc(Hons) and PgCert qualifications. Nicole is also co-author of the book Depression Beater.

Nicole is available for interview on +44 1522 801340.
