Georgetown, GUYANA. April 24, 2006 – The United Republican Party wishes to express extreme disappointment and concern over recent statements by the People’s Progressive Party claiming that the murder of Minister Sawh was “politically motivated and aimed at disrupting the upcoming general elections”. That conclusion without adequate police investigation cannot be considered as responsible, and this party urges the PPP to reconsider and withdraw its statement.
This is a time of grief for the entire nation, and it is inappropriate for the PPP to attempt to use this tragedy to further polarize our nation. We cannot, with reason, justify any conclusions regarding the motives for the slaying of one our most prominent Government officials without adequate police investigation. The PPP and this nation must not be too hasty with its conclusions.
This is a time for forging unity; not a time to seek further division within our society. The PPP’s assertion that Minister Sawh’s murder is aimed at disrupting the general elections is yet another demonstration of that party’s lack of sound judgment. That assertion is seen as an attempt to place the party’s interests above those of this nation. The PPP must therefore withdraw its statement and await the results of police investigations into the Ministers death.
About the United Republican Party: - The United Republican Party was founded in 1985 by a group of NY-based Guyanese who were concerned about the lack of democracy at home. These include Robert Gangadeen, Vishnu Bandhu, Dr. Kamal Roy Narine, Pandit Ramlall, Rohan Somnarine, Dr. Prem Misir and Dr. Leslie Ramsammy. The primary mission of the URP at that time was the restoration of democracy in Guyana through a series of diplomatic initiatives. The party plans to contest the 2006 general elections.
