Delphi Provides Innovative Safety Technology to 2011 North American Truck of the Year

Delphi’s Electronically Scanning Radar Enables Adaptive Cruise Control System with Collision Warning and Brake Support on 2011 Ford Explorer

Troy, Mich — Delphi Automotive continues to deliver the power of innovation in a wide range of products that add real-world value for its customers, as demonstrated by the industry-leading safety technology Delphi provides to the 2011 Truck of the Year, the Ford Explorer.

“The 2011 Ford Explorer offers drivers an innovative safety feature, Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning and Brake Support,” said Beth Schwarting, general director, Electronic Controls, Delphi Electronics & Safety. “The Explorer’s system not only helps drivers avoid accidents, it helps reduce the severity of an accident that is unavoidable.”

Enabled by Delphi’s award-winning electronically scanning radar, the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system which was jointly developed by Ford and Delphi, scans traffic ahead to detect slower-moving vehicles. Upon detecting a vehicle, the ACC system automatically adjusts speed to maintain a driver-specified headway gap. Collision Warning with Brake Support alerts drivers to slower moving and stopped traffic with an audible alert. If drivers do not respond to the alert, the system automatically begins a low level of braking once the driver releases the gas pedal and pre-charges the brakes for quicker reaction when engaged by the driver.

In addition to Delphi’s electronically scanning radar, the 2011 Ford Explorer features Delphi’s Passive Occupant Detection System (PODS). Delphi PODS classifies the occupant in the front passenger seat and sends a classification message to the airbag controller, so that deployment can be adapted based on the occupant’s size.
